President Trump attends U.S. March for Life

An estimated 100 thousand people gathered in the US capital, Washington DC, on Friday to attend the annual March for Life.

Every year since 1974, thousands gather in Washington, D.C., calling on lawmakers to end the legalization of Abortion in the U.S. For the first time in the history of this March for Life, a sitting U.S. President has attended.

In 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Constitution protected women’s right to abortion. That decision opened the way to the legalization of abortion in the U.S. Beginning in 1974, thousands of people gather in Washington, D.C. on the anniversary of that landmark decision, hoping that one day that decision will be reversed. This March for Life is the largest pro-life event in the world.

Both Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush addressed marchers remotely. But for the first time in the history of the March for Life, a sitting President of the United States was present for the annual March for Life on Friday.

In his speech, President Trump said that he, and all those attending the March were there “for a very simple reason: to defend the right of every child, born and unborn, to fulfill their God-given potential.”

He added that the life movement is led by “strong women, amazing faith leaders, and brave students who carry on the legacy of pioneers before us who fought to raise the conscience of our nation and uphold the rights of our citizens”.
