Pope’s message to plenary assembly of Philippine bishops

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin sent a message on the Pope’s behalf to the plenary assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

Pope Francis has assured his support and blessing to members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) as they began their plenary assembly in the capital Manila on Saturday to discuss matters that affect the Church and the country.

More than 80 CBCP members are gathered at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center from Jan. 26 to 28 for their 118th plenary assembly.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin sent the message on the Pope’s behalf to the Philippine bishops saying the Pope is encouraging them to continue in their efforts “to shepherd in truth and love those entrusted to your pastoral care”.

He particularly lauded local initiatives “to advance the mission of the Church in the Philippines”.

The meeting was opened with a Mass presided over by Papal Nuncio Archbishop Gabrielle Caccia.

The Holy Father wished that their meeting bear much fruit in the service of the faithful, helping them to grow in faith and charity.

The plenary assembly meets in regular session twice a year – in January and in July. When they are not in session, the Permanent Council acts and in behalf of the conference.

The Permanent Council is composed of a president, vice president and regional representatives – four from Luzon, two from Visayas , three from Mindanao.

During the three-day meeting, the bishops are expected to discuss reports from various commissions of the CBCP.

CBCP secretary-general, Fr. Marvin Mejia said that the plenary will give the country’s Church leaders to discuss the chance to discuss crucial issues, including the May 13 mid-term polls
