Pope Francis is praying for the late-Cardinal Aguilar and for those who mourn his passing.
The news came in a telegram signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and sent to Archbishop Francisco Perez Gonzalez of Pamplona y Tudela.
Pope Francis recalled “with gratitude the abundant fruit of his service to the Church in Spain – as much in the Bishops’ Conference as in the Diocese of Leon, Granada, and Pamplona y Tudela – and his fruitful work as a teacher and rector at the Pontifical University of Salamanca.”
The Holy Father also offered prayers “for the eternal repose of the deceased prelate.”
Cardinal Fernando Sebastian Aguilar died on Thursday evening at the age of 89, just a few days after he suffered a stroke.
