Pope Francis appoints a new bishop to the Diocese of Clogher, Ireland

On December 8, Pope Francis appoints Msgr Lawrence Duffy, the pastor of St Joseph’s Parish in Carrickmacross, Ireland, as the Bishop of the Diocese of Clogher, in Ireland.

Bishop-elect Lawrence Duffy was born in Magheracloone, Monaghan, in the diocese of Clogher, in 1951. He completed philosophical and theological studies at St Patrick’s College in Maynooth and was ordained a priest in 1976 for the Diocese of Clogher.

He served as Assistant Pastor at parishes in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh (1976-1978), Casleblayney (1978-1994) and in the Cathedral Church of St Macartan (1994-1998).

From 1998 to 2002 he was missioned as a priest of fidei donum in the diocese of Kitui, in Kenya.

After returning to Ireland, and taking a sabbatical year, he became Pastor in Ederney (2003-2007), then in Clones (2007-2013). In 2013 he became pastor of St Joseph’s parish in Carrickmaross, Co. Monaghan and Dean of the Cathedral Chapter. He served as Vicar General of the Diocese of Clogher from 2013 to 2016.
