Israeli jets strike targets in Syria, Gaza

The Isreali Air Force has struck the Islamic Jihad militant group in both Gaza and Syria, after the group fired a barrage of rockets at Israel.

Tensions in the region have been mounting. Israeli jets have launched air-strikes against Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip and Syria, killing two militants, in retaliation for several barrages of rocket attacks fired by the group into Isreal.

The so-called Islamic Jihad is considered a proxy force of Iran and based Syria. The group is also now the second-largest Palestinian militant faction, after Hamas.

According to a military statement from Jerusalem, targets included compounds, underground bunkers, areas used to store materials used for making rockets, and an anti-tank missile training range.

Overnight, around thirty rockets were fired into southern Israel from the Gaza Strip, but many were shot-down by the country’s Iron Dome anti-rocket system, while others fell in open areas and farmland.

Further hostilities are anticipated, and the IDF (Israeli Defence Force) said it was closing roads, schools, and a railway line near the Gaza Strip.
