Pope names parish priest to succeed Maradiaga in Tegucigalpa

Pope Francis has accepted Cardinal Oscar Maradiaga’s resignation as Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and named a parish priest, Father José Vicente Nácher Tatay, to succeed him.

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, presented by Cardinal Ă“scar AndrĂ©s RodrĂ­guez Maradiaga. The cardinal, who has been the coordinator of the Council of Cardinals since 2013, turned 80 on December 29. 

Pope Francis called Father, 58, a parish priest, to succeed the Cardinal.

Father Nácher has been serving as pastor of San Vicente de Paúl in the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula, and regional superior of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) in the Central American country.

José Vicente Nácher Tatay was born on 10 April 1964, in Valencia, Spain. He received his Licentiate in Sociology from the University of Alicante, and later studied Philosophy and Theology at the Major Seminary of the Congregation of the Mission in Barcelona and at the Faculty of Theology in Cataluña. He made his Solemn Profession in the Congregation of the Mission on 20 January 1990 and was ordained a priest on 26 October 1991.

Father José Vicente Nácher has held the following positions: pastor of San Vicente de Paúl in San Pedro Sula (2000-2005); pastor of San José in Puerto Lempira (2006-2016) and episcopal vicar of Mosquitia in the Diocese of Trujillo. He has been pastor of San Vicente de Paúl in San Pedro Sula and regional superior of the Congregation of the Mission in Honduras since 2016.
