Our Deputy Editorial Director, Massimiliano Menichetti, describes the powerful display of faith, unity, and affection for Pope Leo XIV in Madrid, as he message challenges Spain and Europe to rediscover the Gospel as a path toward peace, solidarity, and renewed sense of purpose.

The first image of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Spain was that of Madrid filled with thousands of people: families, young people, the elderly, religious men and women, and the curious—all united.
For days, squares, streets, sports arenas, and stadiums were awash with papal and Spanish flags; messages of peace, unity, and harmony; and expressions of affection for the Successor of Peter, who came to strengthen the faithful in their faith.
The crowds were orderly and deeply engaged: praying, visibly moved, and breaking into long rounds of applause, such as the unforgettable seven-minute ovation in Parliament after hearing the Pope’s words.
Before the institutions of the State, the Pope reaffirmed that authentic democratic coexistence cannot be separated from the defense of every human life, support for the most vulnerable, the protection of freedom of conscience and religion, and the rejection of all war and violence. A just society, he said, is measured by how it protects those who risk being forgotten.
The picture that emerges from this first visit in Spain is not simply one of enthusiasm at welcoming a Pope after so many years, but of a genuine response—the breath of a living conscience rising up and affirming what is good and beautiful.
This country, marked by separatist pressures, political tensions, polarization, and the winds of secularism, revealed a strong root: faith.
According to many observers, Spain responded in an unexpected way, renewing its “yes” to Christ. At every event, gathering, and prayer service, people came together, strengthening a common language, a shared memory, and a sense of eternity.
The Pope embraced the suffering of those wounded by the horror of abuse and invited the local Church to be an example of unity in diversity.
He did not speak to an idealized or nostalgic Spain; rather, he encouraged people to rediscover the joy of the Gospel, the power of love, and the radical commitment of following Christ today in order to build a different world—fraternal, inclusive, supportive, welcoming, humane, and at peace.
Pope Leo addressed a dynamic nation, speaking of a dynamism of vision—one that looks upward, as the motto of the journey, Alzad la mirada (“Lift up your gaze”), suggests—capable of renewing the country, Europe, and the world in truth.
In this spirit, he issued a genuine challenge, planting a seed of friendship in Christ that can transform the life of every person who welcomes Him. In this way, networks are formed that rescue people from selfishness, exploitation, evil, and hatred, while unleashing a creative and life-giving force of love that reaches into every dimension of human life.
In Madrid, the Vicar of Christ turned the logic of the world on its head. He did not offer answers grounded in the victory of one side over another.
Instead, he once again opened the door to the search for meaning that lives in every human heart, pointing to the path that makes it possible to live life to the fullest.
