Pope confers Pontifical Honour on former al-Azhar councillor


Pope Francis has conferred the ‘Commenda con Placca dell’Ordine Piano’ upon Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Abdel Salam, former councillor of the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, in gratitude for his work in strengthening relations between al-Azhar and the Catholic Church.

The Holy See Press Office on Sunday announced the Pope’s bestowal of the Pontifical Honour upon the Grand Imam’s former councillor with the following press statement:

“His Holiness Pope Francis has benevolently granted the honour of ‘Commenda con Placca dell’Ordine Piano’ to His Excellency, Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Abdel Salam, former councillor of the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, for his excellent work for interreligious dialogue and that of strengthening the relations between al-Azhar and the Catholic Church.

This honour will be conferred on Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Abdel Salam on 26 March in Vatican City”.
