Pope appoints new bishop in Monterey, California (USA)

Bishop Daniel Garcia, Auxiliary Bishop of Austin, Texas since 1915, has been appointed by Pope Francis as the Bishop of Monterey in California.

Bishop Garcia was born in Cameron, Texas in 1960. He was ordained a priest in 1988 after completing studies at the St Mary’s Seminary which is part of University of St Thomas in Houston, TX. In 2007 he obtained a Master’s Degree in Liturgy from St John’s University in Collegeville, MN.

Bishop Garcia has been an associate pastor at St Catherine of Siena in Austin (1988-90), Cristo Rey in Austin (1990-1991), St Louis in Austin (1991-92), St Mary Magdalene in Humble (1992-95); and pastor of St Vincent de Paul in Austin (1995-2014). In 2014 he was appointed Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia in the Diocese of Austin. A year later he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Austin.

Bishop Garcia succeeds Bishop Richard Garcia who died in July 2018
