More bodies recovered following Danube boat accident

Four bodies are recovered from the wreckage of the Mermaid tour boat that sank in the Danube as it was lifted out of the river Tuesday morning in the Hungarian capital Budapest.

Divers search for bodies as a huge floating crane lifts the wreck of the Mermaid tour boat to the surface nearly two weeks after a collision with another ship near Budapest’s Margit Bridge.

Efforts to raise the vessel and search for remaining victims have proved problematic due to the river Danube’s high springtime water levels.

Early on Tuesday rescuers were seen carrying away the remains of several victims on stretchers to a small police cruise boat docked nearby.

Once this operation is completed the boat will be handed over to police investigating the collision.

The sightseeing boat sank on May 29 after colliding with a much larger river cruise ship, the Viking Sigyn.

Nineteen South Koreans and a Hungarian crewman have been confirmed dead.

Seven people were rescued following the collision.

The captain of the Viking Sigyn, has been under arrest since the beginning of June, suspected of endangering water transport leading to a deadly mass accident.

The collision was the worst disaster on the Danube in more than 50 years.
