Communication experts and Catholic Bishops from across Africa are preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pan African Committee for Social Communications (CEPACS) at the Lumen Christi Catholic TV Retreat and Media Centre, in Lagos, Nigeria.

The celebration is set to take place on 18-21 November 2023 and will see the presence of the Bishop Chairmen from each region of Africa.

Members of the Standing Committee of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) are also set to attend.

Bishop Emmanuel Badejo of Oyo Diocese, the President of CEPACS, said the event “will be attended also by invited heads and officers of various communications outfits and schools in Africa, including other expatriate dignitaries from outside the assembly.”

The Nigerian Bishop, who heads up the Continental Organising Committee for the celebration, has created a local organizing committee (LOC) in Lagos, comprising communications experts, both priests and lay faithful, and other Church officials from Nigeria and other African countries.

The LOC has the task of ensuring that all the participants from all regions of Africa have a memorable experience during the celebration.

Welcoming delegates to Lagos

Delegates expected at the CEPACS 50th celebration will include high-ranking Church officials from across Africa and elsewhere.

Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins, of Lagos Archdiocese, has expressed joy at the choice of Lagos as the venue for the anniversary celebration and has given his support to the organizing committee.

“We are happy that CEPACS has chosen Lagos as the venue for their 50th anniversary celebration,” said Archbishop Adewale. “By the grace of God, with the quality of personalities serving on the LOC, and with the support of the entire people of God in the Archdiocese, I believe that the event shall be a resounding success.”

The Archbishop is also making preparations to welcome all the delegates to Lagos’ Holy Cross Cathedral where the celebration of the opening/thanksgiving will take place and broadcast live.

CEPACS was established in 1973 by the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) to promote evangelization in the African Church through the utilization of modern means of mass communications.
