Deadly anti-government riots rock Haiti

Major riots throughout Haiti have killed at least 4 people and injured scores, as protesters call for the resignation of President Jovenel Moise.

By James Blears

Anti-government protesters have set fire to car tires and thrown rocks at police and troops.

They are demanding the resignation of President Jovenel Moise, and accuse him of corruption, which he denies.

The President, who’s been in power since 2017, is calling for talks with the opposition, which has refused.

Protesters stoned his home on Sunday, after bodyguards beat a local woman.

Embezzelment scandal

The protests, which are now in the fourth day, were sparked by an alleged embezzlement scandal involving funds provided for development projects by Venezuela, way back in 2008.

Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and suffers from widespread hunger and discontent.
