Less than two weeks before Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Journey to Spain, the Holy Father received the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, in the Vatican.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, after their meeting, which took place prior to the General Audience on Wednesday morning, the Prime Minister met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Vatican Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

The statement noted that the conversations at the Secretariat of State expressed satisfaction with the Pope’s upcoming Journey, describing it as a “sign of the good relations” between the Holy See and Spain.

The Press Office also stated that several international issues were addressed, including “the repercussions of conflicts around the world, migration, the importance of multilateralism and respect for international law, as well as the urgent need for a constant commitment in support of peace.”

Moreover, the parties also discussed “issues of common interest, such as the need to foster fruitful dialogue between the local Church and government authorities, as well as among the various components of civil society, based on mutual respect and aimed at promoting the common good.”
