Pope Francis meets with President Katalin Novák of Hungary

The war in Ukraine, family and Christian values, and religious freedom and persecution, were at the center of Pope Francis’ most recent encounter with the President of the Republic of Hungary, Ms. Katalin Novák, in the Vatican on Friday.

Pope Francis received the President of the Republic of Hungary, Ms. Katalin Novák, in the Vatican on Friday.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the discussions were cordial, recalling the Pope’s Apostolic Journey to Hungary, 28-30 April 2023, and “topics of common interest, such as the family and Christian values.”

“The conversation,” the statement noted, “proceeded with a focus on the war in Ukraine, with special reference to the humanitarian situation and efforts to end the conflict.”

Religious freedom and the situation of persecuted Christians in the world were also discussed.

After her time with the Holy Father, the Hungarian President met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Under-Secretary for Relations with States, Msgr. Mirosław Wachowski.
